Running Windows viruses on Linux with Wine

This wasn't really news worthy as much as it was funny. It seems that NewsForge has an interesting article in which Matt Moen attempts to run some Windows virii under Linux through Wine. The results were kinda funny.

The results? Most of them could run on Wine, and some would even install a payload. But none were able to propogate. I was suprised at that... I would have thought Wine's emulation by now would be better than that. :)

I wish I had that sort of time to investigate this further. You know, run something like Fedora under VMWare, so I can run Wine, so I can see how the malicious code interacts with the system. I wouldn't be surprised if I could get more damaging results. Oh well. I'll let others play and do that.

Many thanks to Alan for pointing out the article.

Cheers.
