How A Criminal Might Infiltrate Your Network

Microsoft has published an interesting article showing the anatomy of a hack. The article is not intended to show you how to hack something, but rather to show how attackers can take advantage of your mistakes. They say that this will enable you to avoid the common pitfalls that criminal hackers exploit.

What was neat about this was that it was an article linked off the home page of microsoft.com. Good to see such educational pieces getting such exposure.

"Infiltrating a network" is a crack, not a hack. Hackers are people who enjoy solving complex problems. Crackers are people who break into computer systems. The media took the positive hacker term from the 60s and spun it into a negative light.

Matt, most of the readers to this blog know the difference. A dictionary lesson isn't really needed.

The content is the same. And just as useful for a defender to review.

It's good that your readers know the difference. Terminology is important. It adds a level of credibility. Plus using the words correctly may someday fix the public's incorrect negative perception of hackers.
