September 05, 2004OMG - Thanks for the bandwidth bump Shaw!So recently I upgraded my Digital Cable Internet Service for SOHO business so I could take advantage of a view things like static IPs, more monthly bandwidth etc. Didn't realize I was also getting an increase in speed. How is downloading 547 megs in less than 15 minutes grab ya?
In reality, I am guessing this is probably cached somewhere local on Shaw's network. But none the less... that speed ROCKS! Now... time to be sucked into the productivity virus vortex that is the new Medal of Honor. Thanks for the link Alan. Posted by SilverStr at September 5, 2004 07:44 AM | TrackBackComments
Our local cable company kicked the Roadrunner speeds up to 3MB last summer. It's pretty amazing. Very few places pump out anything fast enough to take advantage of it but I have gotten download speeds of over 2.7MB from MovieLink and bit torrent downloads. [what's up with this?!?! "Your comment could not be submitted due to questionable content: hot+mail.com" I can't even make a post with the word hot+mail in it!] Posted by: Shannon J Hager at September 5, 2004 02:13 PMscratch MovieLink from that list. They show download rates at Kb/s not KB/s! Nice trick they use, showing size in MB and rate in Kb. Fooled me. Posted by: Shannon J Hager at September 6, 2004 01:59 PMI regularly get 400-500 kbyte/s on my standard Shaw residential cable connection... and occassionly up to 550 kbyte/s depending on the time of day (night). Things like Linux and Debian download mirrors are capable of high downloads though... I've gotten anwhere between 2 and 7 megabyte (not bit!) on these from our Shaw/BigPipe feed at work. Unfortunately, downloading the kernel in 17 seconds means I can't grab a coffee in the meantime :-( Now, it would be nice if Shaw would actually give static IPs that were static. One of my customers has the business package with "Static IPs" but were just asked to change them... wtf? In the meantime, my home firewall still has the same "dynamic IP" for 18+ months. It would be nice to have carrier neutral IPs... but there's tricks for that too. Posted by: Wim at September 6, 2004 06:27 PMWim, Ya I hear ya about Shaw changing the static IPs recently. I went from a 24.* addr to a 70.* addr. It was a requirement for their new backbone. Sucks, but its reality. It's not like it changes every month. Posted by: SilverStr at September 6, 2004 07:03 PMI forgot to ask - is the upload speed any better? I can never do more then just under 0.5 mbit/s. Would be really nice to have a symmetrical connection, eg 2 up, 2 down. Even 1 up 3 down would be nice.... Posted by: Wim at September 7, 2004 11:32 PM |
