Web Based MSN Messenger

Kudos to Microsoft. I just stumbled across a beta of their new Web Based MSN Messenger.

It even works great through FireFox. I use Windows Messenger exclusively now (Windows Messenger is MSN Messenger without any ads :) ), surrendering my Jabber, Yahoo and ICQ accounts. If I find myself offsite and don't want to use my MPx200, I now have a new way to stay in contact. Works great.

Good job Microsoft!

Well, but it doesn't work well with pop blockers. How crappy is that with XP SP2 around the corner?!?

Simply add the MSN site to your allowed hosts for popups. Both the new versio of IE in XPSP2, and FireFox give you that ability with a simple mouse click.

I understand what you're saying, David, but think about how much hot water Microsoft would get in if the SP2 popup blocker didn't block something just because it came from a Microsoft-owned domain.

Personally, I say it's working as designed.

I like the idea of web-based IM. Except it's missing a lot of the functionality of the standard win32 client - for example, it totally ignores contact groups, and puts everyone into either an "Offline" or "online" :-(
