March 25, 2004Trip down memory laneAlan was going through some old home dirs on one of his servers, when he came across an old account of mine from back in 1999. After being told to stroll down memory lane I did, and OMG. I forgot what my desktops used to look like. Anyways, for your amusement, here were screenshots I took of my desktop back in 1999. The first one was my main development machine back then, and the second one was my laptop, which I still use today for some forensics work. (Its only got a 486 capable of 800x600, so it pretty much sucks except for console work) So, got any interesting shots from back before the turn of the century for me to see? Damm you were so 31337 back then :) Posted by: fozbaca at March 25, 2004 02:15 PM:P Posted by: SilverStr at March 25, 2004 02:28 PMthese look almost like current screenshots, to be honest. so little has changed in the free UN*X world in the past five years. Posted by: jose at March 25, 2004 02:44 PMWell, I doubt very many people use WindowMaker much anymore... and Gnome got a LOT better since way back then. But all and all, you are right. Not much does change once you get past the original kewlness back then of transparent eterms and dockable applets. Sad really. Of course, until Longhorn comes out we have to say the same thing for Windows, hold that to the Crayola look for XP. Posted by: SilverStr at March 25, 2004 03:39 PMEarliest shot I can find is Mon 28 Aug 2000: http://dtmf.org/~zomba/screenshot.jpg Posted by: zomba at March 26, 2004 05:22 AMI always find that Linux desktop screen shots look SOOOOO much cooler than Windows desktops, usually because (i) they have wicked wallpaper (versus the very "safe" wallpaper shipped with Windows) and (ii) I WANT TRANSPARENT COMMAND PROMPTS!!! Posted by: Peter Torr at March 26, 2004 08:20 AMI could come to enjoy transparent cmd prompts as well. Posted by: SilverStr at March 26, 2004 09:41 AMyea..gee.. I wish that were possible.. http://www.stardock.com/ian/conl.jpg :P Posted by: Ian Hanschen at March 27, 2004 07:34 AMIan, That doesn't work for me. The inner child window should be semi-transparent, but not the window frame. Posted by: SilverStr at March 27, 2004 11:04 AMThere is no inner child. The console window is a registered class that is created with nonclient scrollbars(when needed) and a caption. It's possible to use a color mask to set only a specific color semitransparent(such as the background). Posted by: Ian Hanschen at March 27, 2004 10:12 PM |
