February 27, 2004HFNetChkPro adds Linux and Agent CapabilitiesNow this is an interesting find announced at the RSA conference. Shavlik Technologies has added Linux and Agent Capabilities to HFNetChkPro Patch Management Solution. For those who don't recall, these guys wrote the engine that is used in the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer. And up until now... all their products were focused n Windows patch management. HFNetChkPro will now give network administrators the option to roll out patches via agents for customer applications that require them. In addition, based on the recent acquisition of Gibraltar Software technology, a separate version of HFNetChkPro will allow customers running Red Hat Linux to scan the network for Linux operating system vulnerabilities, identify machines to be patched, and automatically roll out and validate patches. Nice. Really nice. Only draw back... its for RedHat only. I hate it when the world thinks Redhat == Linux, making announcements "generic" when they should be more specific. Then again, I bet it wouldn't be hard to get an agent running on Debian. Any takers? Posted by SilverStr at February 27, 2004 04:38 PM | TrackBackComments
For Debian, it's kind of overkill... It's easier and simpler to use Debian's own tools. Ensure that your sources.list file contains the security updates repository. Then, add a cronjob to periodically (eg weekly/nightly) download the new packages, and either send an email to you that they are available or just install them. Since these are only security updates and don't have new features, you can be pretty confident that it won't break to much. Posted by: Wim at February 28, 2004 03:43 PM |
