February 09, 2004Microsoft releases source code to Allegiance Video GameWow. Can't believe my eyes. Microsoft has released the source code to their game Allegiance for anyone and everyone to download. I have never played the game myself, but there seems to be a loyal following. From some of the screenshots, it looks like a sweet game. If you are a game coder... you might be interested in looking at their code (Warning... over 511 meg download). Cool. They are finally learning from iD I guess :) It'd be interesting to see if this spawns the sort of community support that the doom/quake* released games have gotten. A good start nonetheless! In a way I still agree with Del/Brian's opinions that after N years, source code should be released. This is especially true in the gaming community, where after a year or two a game is generally considered old and useless. Posted by: Arcterex at February 10, 2004 09:00 AMYa, it would be nice to see an old archive of the source code to old games and applications who are obsolete. Del and Brian always had a good idea there. Of course, could you imagine what would happen if the source for Windows 3.1 floated around? *shudder* Posted by: SilverStr at February 10, 2004 12:31 PMSuddenly wine and apple would be able to run old apps for one thing :) Is there any reason for microsoft *not* to release the 3.1 source code? Posted by: Arcterex at February 10, 2004 03:49 PMYou'd be surprised how many millions of computers are probably still running Windows 3.1. Think CNC equipment, other embedded systems, phone systems, perhaps even some of NASA's stuff, schools with limited budgets, and so on. Whether Microsoft is still making money for situations like this is debatable I guess. It has a lot of advantages - low hardware requirements, low memory usage, small hard disk foot print, fairly stable, easy to use/understand, and so on. For kicks, I did some google searches, and found some fairly active Windows 3.1 webrings (!!). Posted by: Wim at February 10, 2004 11:28 PM |
